The onion ( Allium cepa L., from Latin cepa "onion"), also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is a vegetable that is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium . The onion has only 42kcal per 100g, of which the most energy comes from carbohydrates (92%). The average chemical composition of the port is: humidity 91%, protein 1.2%, fat 0.1%, vitamin C 6mg/100g.

An onion is rich in heart health ingredients. An onion has long been known and recognized as a natural antibiotic and antipyretic. These properties are the result of a synergistic effect of vitamin C, quercetin and isothiocyanate, therefore particularly desirable in the period of flu. It is one of the oldest vegetable crops. Its aroma is aromatic and the taste is strong, more or less angry. The taste of an onion depends on the climate in which it grows - the lighter the climate, sweeter onion.

Varieties of onions differ in color, size and taste. In spring and summer there is a high variety of young onion, which has a sweet or medium strong flavor. In the fall, the onions with big heads are harvested and dried, and after a few months they have a dry and easily breakable shell. The name got by its color - white, yellow and red (purple). There is also ljutika, a sort of onions with a small head.

Onions come from Asia and the Middle East, and it is grown for over 5,000 years. The Egyptians particularly appreciated the value of the onion by paying the workers who built the pyramids with onions, while the pharaohs (eg Tutankamon) put onions in the tombs to serve them in the afterlife.

In India, from the VI. century, onions were used for cooking and for medical treatment. The popularity of onions was also maintained in the time of ancient Greeks and Romans, and in particular use by the poorer layers of people in addition to their simple meals.

In the Middle Ages it was a irreplaceable vegetable in many European countries, so it was even served as part of a healthy breakfast. Christopher Columbus spread the onion to the west.
